Protecting your business through sustainable management of old tyres
Why should our fleet be concerned about the fate of old tyres?
Helping to deal with a waste issue that, up until now, has been generally hidden from view could soon be a requirement of keeping and gaining government transport contracts.
What that means for fleet operators is that gaining TSA accreditation (which is free), is not only socially responsible but it is already a requirement of some contracts offered by federal, state and local governments; and likely to be so for many more in the future.
How big is the waste tyre issue?
With Australia generating the equivalent of 56 million* used passenger car tyres every year (30% of that volume coming from heavy vehicles) the challenge of sustainably dealing with waste tyres is becoming front-of-mind for consumers, government and industry alike.
Who is Tyre Stewardship Australia and what do they do?
Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) is a Federal and State Government supported, ACCC authorised industry cooperative program educating industry and consumers and investing in research and development of new uses for recycled tyre material. Part of that program is to direct consumers and businesses/government enterprises to TSA accredited operators.
What does being TSA accredited require and how do we take part?
TSA Accreditation requires that you deal with tyre suppliers and recyclers within the scheme and the only other major obligation is to report on the collection of end-of-life tyres.
Your old tyres could end up being under the new tyres of your fleet.
Rubberised road surface spray and rubber-crumb mix asphalt are two of the highest volume uses of tyre-derived material. Synthetic hockey or soccer pitches, equestrian dressage arenas and a host of other commercial and infrastructure opportunities are helping to turn a former environmental challenge into new, green jobs.
What should we do?
Start the process of becoming TSA accredited now. Benefit from making sure your business not only contributes to the recycling effort but also meets the sustainability expectations of your customers.
