Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) has supported two pivotal projects aimed at enhancing the use of crumb rubber modified asphalt (CRMA) in road construction. Collaborating with VicRoads and Queensland's Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), these initiatives focus on refining asphalt specifications and facilitating the transfer of proven CRMA technologies to promote sustainable infrastructure nationwide.
The first project centered on developing an evidence-based strategy to update VicRoads' asphalt specifications. The goal was to identify engineering and economically viable applications for CRMA, particularly in dense graded asphalt and structural fatigue layers. By focusing on performance-based specifications, the project aimed to encourage broader adoption of CRMA in Victoria's road network.
The second initiative targeted the transfer of established CRMA and sealing technologies to Queensland. This involved adapting successful practices from other regions to suit Queensland's specific conditions, with an emphasis on increasing the use of spray seals incorporating crumb rubber. The project also addressed potential environmental concerns by monitoring emissions associated with CRMA application, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards.
Collectively, these projects have:
By aligning technical research with practical implementation strategies, TSA's collaborative efforts with VicRoads and Queensland's TMR have laid the groundwork for broader acceptance and utilization of crumb rubber in Australia's road infrastructure.
