What we do

Driving sustainable outcomes for Australia's used tyres is our priority.

We run the national and voluntary Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme (TPSS) to help reduce the environmental, health and safety impacts of tyres which reach their end of life in Australia.

Leading the way in tyre research

TSA leads Australia’s most comprehensive research agenda focused on improving the way we manage end-of-life tyres (EOLT).

Our research doesn’t just sit on a shelf — it shapes policy, informs investment and drives innovation across sectors.

TSA works closely with universities, consultants, recyclers, policymakers and global partners to ensure our research delivers value across the entire tyre supply chain. From raw material insights to recovery technologies and life cycle impact, our evidence base is helping Australia transition to a circular tyre economy.

How our research makes an impact

Our research supports decision-making at every level:

  • Industry & innovators rely on our data to assess risks, understand technology and meet procurement or ESG requirements.
  • Local governments use case-specific insights to apply for grants, trial new products and adopt safer, higher performing materials.
  • Community groups & media access our research to understand local impacts like illegal dumping or microplastics.
  • Government & policy makers use TSA research to provide fit for purpose information to decision makers, develop waste strategies and create regulation.

We don’t work in silos. Our research is shared freely and developed with open consultation, industry and stakeholder review, and technical advisory input. We also contribute findings to state and national roundtables, parliamentary inquiries and sector-specific standards development.

What we research

We fund a wide range of research projects that help build the case for change:

  • Tyre composition: Understanding what tyres are made of, and how that affects reuse, recycling and environmental impact
  • Technology assessments: Investigating the ongoing development of processing technologies like pyrolysis and devulcanization, particularly in the context of their material circularity and circular economy outcomes
  • Carbon and emissions: Helping industry and government track the climate impacts of different tyre recovery processes, through methods such as Life Cycle Assessments
  • Health and safety: Bridging the gap between the health and environmental impacts of tyre particles, tyre recovery and end-of-life tyre solutions
  • Illegal dumping impacts: Analysing the true cost of non-compliant disposal for local councils and communities

Life Cycle Assessment

This landmark study, conducted in partnership with LCA experts, measured the environmental impacts of tyre-derived products used in roads and infrastructure. It compared these outcomes to traditional materials and highlighted clear carbon and resource savings in many applications.

Collaborate with us

We regularly partner with researchers, universities and technical specialists to deliver targeted, high-impact work.

We’re always looking to:

  • Collaborate on applied research and feasibility studies

  • Develop robust data to inform procurement and planning

  • Fill knowledge gaps in areas like emissions, environmental impact and circularity

  • Support alignment with new sustainability standards and reporting
