What we do

Driving sustainable outcomes for Australia's used tyres is our priority.

We run the national and voluntary Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme (TPSS) to help reduce the environmental, health and safety impacts of tyres which reach their end of life in Australia.

Tyre and road wear particles (TRWPs) are increasingly scrutinised for their potential impact on human health, ecosystems, and air and water quality.

This research summary compiles global findings to inform Australia’s understanding of the scale, risks and knowledge gaps surrounding TRWPs.

Commissioned by Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA), the review draws on over 50 academic and technical sources to provide a balanced overview of:

  • How TRWPs form and enter the environment
  • Current evidence on health and ecological effects
  • Global policy responses and regulatory trends
  • Priorities for future research in the Australian context

This report is designed to inform researchers, policymakers and industry partners committed to reducing environmental harm while promoting informed, science-based approaches to tyre stewardship.
