COAG proposed export ban on waste tyres

Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) congratulates the vision set by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) at its meeting held Friday 9 August in Cairns. In its communiqué, leaders agreed to establish a timetable to ban the export of various waste material, which includes tyres.

Lina Goodman, CEO TSA, welcomes a discussion with Government leaders in the planning of a robust and practical process for managing the proposed ban on waste tyres.  In doing so, an economic approach that addresses domestic use of tyre-derived product and local investment for technology to consume waste tyres is essential.  This combined with TSA’s existing efforts across its Market Development Fund is constructive in assisting Government reach this target.

A ban, where practical, will ensure the true cost of recycling waste tyres is justly distributed.  Whilst Government advances these discussions, TSA will continue to work in partnership with global quality assurance company, Intertek, to monitor and verify its foreign-end markets to ensure existing exports of waste tyres do not cause any social or environmental harm.

Lina Goodman added that, “the priority set by COAG is a significant move forward, one which TSA supports. In doing so, our Leaders need to advocate for increased use of tyre-derived products across traditional applications such as road and rail; applications that have proven successful in many parts of the world.”
