Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA), in partnership with the National Transport Research Organisation (NTRO), is undertaking a national capability mapping project to better understand the current state of crumb rubber bitumen and asphalt manufacturing across Australia.
This initiative supports broader initiatives to develop viable markets for end-of-life tyres by identifying where and how crumb rubber is being incorporated into road construction products — and where there may be gaps or barriers to broader adoption.
Why this project matters
The addition of crumb rubber to bitumen and asphalt offers multiple performance and environmental benefits. These include improved elasticity, enhanced durability in high temperatures, and greater resistance to UV ageing. Despite these benefits, uptake of crumb rubber modified asphalt varies across states, and is often limited by infrastructure readiness, equipment constraints, or lack of awareness.
By mapping the current landscape, this project will help:
Get involved: Take the survey
TSA and NTRO are inviting manufacturers, contractors, and related industry participants to complete a short survey to help capture relevant data and insights.
Participation is strongly encouraged from organisations involved in asphalt production, spray sealing, or the use of modified binders in road construction. Your input will directly shape the accuracy and impact of this national capability snapshot.
