Recycling trial gives mining tyres a second life

Tyre Stewardship Australia is proud to see initiatives like Rio Tinto’s tyre recycling trial leading the charge in tackling one of the toughest parts of tyre stewardship – dealing with massive off-the-road tyres on mining sites across Australia.

Mining tyres are big, complex, and not easy to manage at end-of-life – but this trial shows what’s possible when industry innovation meets purpose. It’s exactly the kind of progress we’ve been championing.

The tyre recycling sector is ready and able to support more of this work, with advanced facilities and know-how waiting to scale – and now we need more action and uptake across the board.

Recycling options exist that can give these tyres a second life in roads, infrastructure and more, replacing outdated practices like on-site burial.
