What we do

Driving sustainable outcomes for Australia's used tyres is our priority.

We run the national and voluntary Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme (TPSS) to help reduce the environmental, health and safety impacts of tyres which reach their end of life in Australia.

Stop Tyre Dumping: How You Can Help Protect Our Environment with Just One Snap

Each year in Australia, a staggering 67 million equivalent used car tyres reach the end of their life.
But here’s the problem: only 66% of those tyres are actually recovered.

The rest — equivalent to more than 23 million car tyres — are either buried, stockpiled, sent to landfill or dumped illegally across our towns, parks, bushland, and waterways. And that’s bad news for our environment.

Why Dumped Tyres Are So Dangerous

When tyres are dumped illegally, they don’t just make a mess. They create serious long-term problems:

  • Fire risk: Tyres can catch fire easily and burn for weeks or even months, releasing toxic chemicals into the air.
  • Water pollution: Chemicals from dumped tyres can seep into soil and waterways, potentially harming wildlife and contaminating drinking water.
  • Breeding grounds for pests: Stagnant water collecting inside tyres becomes the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes and pests.
  • Lost resources: Tyres are full of valuable materials that could be recycled into roads, footpaths, and even flooring — but when dumped, that potential is lost.

Tyre dumping isn’t just ugly — it’s dangerous to our health, our wildlife, and our communities, and it’s a waste of resources.

How You Can Make a Difference (In Under a Minute)

The good news?
Helping to tackle this problem is easy — and it starts with one simple action:

If you see dumped tyres or a suspicious stockpile, Snap Send Solve it.

  • Snap a photo of the dumped tyres
  • Send a report through the Snap Send Solve app
  • Solve the issue by alerting the right authorities and Tyre Stewardship Australia

The Snap Send Solve app automatically sends your report to the correct council or authority, as well as Tyre Stewardship Australia — who track hotspots and works on sustainable solutions for end-of-life tyres.

As Lina Goodman, CEO of Tyre Stewardship Australia, explains:

"Data is a powerful tool — but only when it's shared. This partnership gives us real-time visibility into where the problems are, so we can work together with government, industry, and the community to solve them."

Your Snap Could Help Support Better Outcomes For Our Old Tyres

Recycled tyres can have a second life in many productive ways:

  • In road asphalt and surfacing

  • As brake pads on cars and trucks

  • In commercial flooring

  • In pavements and footpaths

But it all starts with being vigilant and reporting dumped tyres before they cause harm.
