What we do

Driving sustainable outcomes for Australia's used tyres is our priority.

We run the national and voluntary Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme (TPSS) to help reduce the environmental, health and safety impacts of tyres which reach their end of life in Australia.

Calling TSA Accredited Recyclers: Join Our New Crumb Rubber Testing Pilot

Tyre Stewardship Australia is inviting TSA Accredited recyclers to take part in a new pilot program that will test crumb rubber and rubber granules against evolving industry standards.

Participating recyclers will receive:

  • TSA-funded lab testing of your crumb rubber and granules, aligned with current market expectations
  • A confidential report on your sample data, including a Q&A session to unpack results
  • The opportunity to help shape emerging product standards and support broader market uptake

If you’re a TSA Accredited recycler and would like to get involved, please contact us at getonboard@tyrestewardship.org.au

Why This Matters

TSA recently surveyed Australian manufacturers across asphalt, paving, and resin-bound surfaces to better understand their technical requirements when sourcing recycled rubber.

The results confirmed what many in the sector have long understood: crumb rubber is not a generic product, but a precision input.

Key insights included:

  • Application-specific granule sizes are essential
  • Low contamination levels and consistent grading are critical for safety and quality
  • Additional properties like bulk density and shape consistency can influence final product performance

What This Pilot Aims to Do

The new testing program will provide a clearer picture of how crumb rubber produced by TSA Accredited recyclers aligns with industry needs — helping to define specifications, improve consistency, and build greater confidence across markets.

This initiative is part of TSA’s broader effort to drive uptake of tyre-derived products and support a strong, transparent domestic recovery sector.
