Inquiry into the Australian Tyre Industry

“Australia stands to gain from an industry wide approach to change, and that change can only occur if the Federal Government steps in to support a cost benefit analysis” – for Australia’s end-of-life tyres.

On Friday, 1 May 2026, our CEO Lina Goodman appeared as a witness to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Industry, Innovation and Science for the Inquiry into the Australian Tyre Industry.

Australia generates around 537,000 tonnes of end‑of‑life tyres each year – yet only 17% are value‑added here, 49% are exported as tyre‑derived fuel (coal replacement), and the remainder are stockpiled, buried or dumped.

Lina also highlighted the growing impact of free‑riders: importers taking responsibility for tyres at end-of-life are being undercut by those who contribute little to nothing – including companies responsible for 47% of replacement tyre imports and 99% of vehicle‑fitted imports.

We welcome the Committee’s work and the opportunity to help shape a practical, evidence-based pathway forward – one that maximises the circular value of the resources in Australia’s end-of-life tyres.
