Viva Energy has successfully processed 10 tonnes of tyre pyrolysis oil at its Geelong Refinery, marking a milestone in Australia’s potential transition to lower-carbon fuels and circular resource recovery. The demonstration involved co-processing imported pyrolysis oil derived from end-of-life tyres alongside traditional crude oil to produce a full range of fuels and products.
This follows a similar trial with plastic-derived pyrolysis oil in May and demonstrates the facility’s capability to process alternative feedstocks at scale.
The tyre pyrolysis oil used for this trial was imported from Poland. Viva Energy has signed an MoU with Canadian-based Klean Industries to explore the development of a local tyre recycling facility in Melbourne. If realised, the proposed facility could process up to 80,000 tonnes of used tyres per year, producing recovered carbon black, steel, and biogenic pyrolysis oil – the latter intended for processing at Geelong Refinery.
