What we do

Driving sustainable outcomes for Australia's used tyres is our priority.

We run the national and voluntary Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme (TPSS) to help reduce the environmental, health and safety impacts of tyres which reach their end of life in Australia.

Technical Specifications: Crumb Rubber

How Specifications Work in Australia

There is no single national specification for crumb rubber in roads. Instead, each state road authority sets its own technical standards.

State-based variation: Every jurisdiction maintains different specifications (e.g. TfNSW R118 in NSW, VicRoads Section 421/422 in Victoria, TMR MRTS18 in Queensland).

Scope differences: Some specifications cover both crumb rubber asphalt and sprayed seals; others are limited in scope.

Industry best practice:

  1. Always begin with your own state road authority’s specification.
  2. In the absence of a state or territory guideline, practitioners generally refer to Austroads guidance as the national reference point, or adopt equivalent specifications from other jurisdictions.
  3. Document your choice in procurement and tender documents to provide clarity for contractors.

This page collates publicly available references and resources. Users should always confirm they are working with the most up-to-date specification and consult the relevant authority where required. TSA does not provide engineering advice.
