What we do

Driving sustainable outcomes for Australia's used tyres is our priority.

We run the national and voluntary Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme (TPSS) to help reduce the environmental, health and safety impacts of tyres which reach their end of life in Australia.

TSA Accredited Tyre Retailer Toolbox

Tyre retailers play an invaluable role in the sustainable management and recycling of used tyres for Australia, and include any business that repairs, replaces or sells tyres.

To help you manage used tyres responsibly, we have collated handy information specifically for tyre retailers accredited with Tyre Stewardship Australia.

Answers to frequently asked questions

What are the benefits of being TSA Accredited?

Through TSA, tyre supply chain operators that manage used tyres responsibly can become an accredited participant in the Australian Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme.

This means they become part of a trusted network that:

  • shows consumers they can trust that their used tyres will be recycled responsibly and go to productive use not waste
  • reduces the environmental, social and economic risks of tyres going to waste through landfill, illegal stockpiles and dumping in their local community
  • helps deter rogue operators in their local community
  • supports Australian recyclers and manufacturers to produce tyre derived material which can be used to build better roads, sporting fields and many other surfaces and products
  • helps avoid the risk of greenwashing
  • benefits from point-of-sale promotions and consumer education

What types of tyres are covered by the Scheme?

The Scheme applies to most tyres used on motor vehicles and trailers — including cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, mining and earthmoving equipment, cranes, tractors and forklifts.

How much does it cost to become accredited?

There is no cost to become accredited. However, tyre importers, vehicle manufacturers and off-the-road (OTR) tyre suppliers who join the Scheme pay a small levy based on the number of tyres they bring into Australia. These funds support the Scheme’s education, funding and research programs.

How are participants monitored?

TSA checks in with participants regularly to make sure they’re still meeting the Scheme’s commitments. This includes light-touch audits, annual reporting, and occasional site visits — all focused on improvement and transparency.

What can I do if I see suspicious activity around tyre collections, dumping or stockpiling of tyres?

You have several options, and you can report anonymously if you choose to do so. The more specific information you can provide, the better, as evidence is needed to support further investigations. Photos, locations, names/registration details are all really useful.

You can either:

  • Email TSA at getonboard@tyrestewardship.org.au – we can pass information on to the relevant council or authority on your behalf, or anonymously, if you prefer.
  • Install the SnapSendSolve app on your phone and use it to report dumped tyres.
  • Report the issue to your local EPA or environmental regulator: VIC | NSW | SA | WA | QLD | NT | ACT | TAS

What products and application are made with used tyres, and how can I source recycled tyre products?

The materials from used tyres can be used in roads and pavements, sporting surfaces and playgrounds, concrete crash barriers, non-slip rubber matting and much more.

See the projects TSA has funded to support research and market development.

What should consumers know about choosing a tyre retailer accredited with TSA?

By choosing a TSA Accredited tyre retailer, your old tyres are collected by recyclers who are committed to the responsible management of Australia's used tyres. Your old tyres can be made into anything from roads, paths, playgrounds, flooring and more.

More information for consumers can be found on our mytyresmychoice.com.au web page.

If Accreditation is free, then why do I have to pay a disposal levy?

TSA is an industry-led voluntary product stewardship organisation, funded by tyre importers and auto brands.

A tyre importer may choose to pass on a levy to their retail network. TSA is not involved, or can influence an importers decision to recover this cost through its retail network.

If you have any questions regarding disposal fees, please contact your tyre importer or head office to discuss.

See the projects that TSA has committed to funding through the Tyre Stewardship fund here.
