OTR tyres are integral to Australia's mining operations, yet their end-of-life management presents significant challenges.
In 2019, Tyre Stewardship Australia commissioned Randell Environmental Consulting, in collaboration with Brock Baker Environmental Consulting, to analyse the consumption patterns and disposal practices of off-the-road (OTR) tyres within the mining industry.
Key insights from the report include:
- An estimated 118,000 tonnes of used OTR tyres were generated in 2018/19, with only 11% recovered.
- The majority (81%) of these tyres are presumed to be disposed of onsite at mining or similar sites.
- Detailed analysis of OTR tyre consumption, generation, and fate across different Australian states.
- Evaluation of current disposal practices and potential recovery methods, including repair, retreading, recycling, and energy recovery.
- Recommendations for improving recovery rates, such as integrating used mining tyres into the Tyre Stewardship Scheme and establishing processing sites near mining areas.
This comprehensive analysis aims to inform stakeholders and guide policy development towards sustainable management of OTR tyres in the mining sector.
