What we do

Driving sustainable outcomes for Australia's used tyres is our priority.

We run the national and voluntary Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme (TPSS) to help reduce the environmental, health and safety impacts of tyres which reach their end of life in Australia.

Who we work with

Australian Drivers

Australian drivers play a big role in the demand and use of new and second-hand tyres and the generation of used ones.

Australian drivers include:

  • Passenger car, bus, truck and motorbike owners and drivers

  • Automotive enthusiasts

  • Automotive clubs and groups

  • Media that covers automotive news and information

Australia’s vast distances make our vehicles essential to our lives and transportation needs. As a result, despite our sparse population, Australia ranks in the top 20 countries for vehicles per capita.

The Statistics

At any one time, there are over 21 million registered vehicles and 4.7 million caravans, trailers and plant and equipment in use, which equate to more than 100 million tyres on our roads.

In 2023-24 alone, drivers of passenger tyres consumed an estimated 740,000 tonnes of new, second-hand or retread tyres and generated around 200,000 tonnes of used tyres.

Through TSA, drivers can choose contributing brands and accredited retailers that are committed to responsible tyre management. By making these choices, drivers can help support positive outcomes for used tyres – including their valuable use in infrastructure projects that use tyre-derived material, such as:

  • roads

  • pavements

  • sporting fields

  • playgrounds

Australian drivers can do good with their new and used tyres by:

  • buying their new tyres or vehicles from the tyre and auto brands that contribute to sustainable solutions for used tyres by paying a levy on every tyre they import into Australia

  • replacing or repairing their tyres at a TSA Accredited Retailer that manages used tyres responsibly

  • choosing an accredited Tyre Collector or Recycler to pick up used tyres

  • reporting tyres that are illegally dumped in their local community
