What we do

Driving sustainable outcomes for Australia's used tyres is our priority.

We run the national and voluntary Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme (TPSS) to help reduce the environmental, health and safety impacts of tyres which reach their end of life in Australia.

T-Lok Rubber Safety Barrier receives ASBAP approval

Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) is delighted to announce that a new application for crumb rubber is now ready to open pipelines to more end markets for Australia’s circular tyre economy, with value for:

  • Construction
  • Engineering
  • Government Road Safety
  • Manufacturing
  • Mining
  • Outdoor event managers
  • Road users
  • Tyre recyclers and processors

The T-Lok Rubber Safety Barrier, developed by the University of Melbourne and Saferoads, with funding and support from TSA, has been recommended for acceptance by the Austroads Safety Barrier Assessment Panel and is now ready to go to market.

This Australian-designed, developed and built solution will increase used tyre recovery – 1 kilometre of T-Lok barriers uses 12 tonnes of recycled rubber which is the equivalent of 2,000 passenger tyres.

It is projected the product could use up to 60,000 (360 tonnes) passenger tyres per year; provided industry gets behind this innovation and grasps the opportunity to deliver on their recycled materials’ targets.

Australia’s circular economy will benefit from the commercial opportunities the Rubber T-Lok Barrier represents, particularly in regional, rural and remote areas; taking us another step closer to meeting the Australian Government’s 2030 targets of an 80% recovery rate from all waste streams and a 43% reduction of carbon emissions.

TSA congratulates all those involved for their ingenuity and effort in bringing this idea to market.
